Dubai(The COW News Digital) The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finalized five host cities in India for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026. Media reports suggest that preparations are in their final stages, with venue allocations now largely confirmed.
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is set to play a central role in the tournament, hosting both the opening match and the final. As the largest cricket stadium in the world by seating capacity, the venue has emerged as the ICC’s preferred location for marquee fixtures, following its successful hosting of high-profile matches in previous global tournaments.
Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, one of cricket’s most iconic grounds, has been shortlisted to host one of the two semi-final matches. The second semi-final is likely to take place in Sri Lanka. However, in a scenario where India and Pakistan face one another in a semi-final, Colombo is expected to be awarded hosting rights to manage security and crowd-related logistics more effectively. This arrangement reflects longstanding diplomatic and sporting complexities between the two neighboring nations.
The five Indian cities under consideration include Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Chennai. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is expected to finalize its hosting venues from among Colombo, Pallekele, Dambulla, and Hambantota. Final confirmation from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is anticipated in the coming weeks.
Team India enters the 2026 tournament as the defending champion, having won the 2024 T20 World Cup co-hosted by the United States and the West Indies. That triumph marked India’s first T20 World Cup title in over a decade, fueling heightened expectations and interest in the upcoming edition.
The decision to jointly host the event represents both an operational collaboration and a strategic effort to distribute international cricket activity across the region. It also highlights Sri Lanka’s efforts to revitalize and expand its cricket infrastructure amid ongoing economic recovery challenges.
With venue planning nearing completion, attention will now shift to schedule finalization, ticketing frameworks, and security coordination. The ICC is expected to release the full match schedule in early 2026.
