The report details that eight journalists and one social media influencer were killed as a result of violence, while 117 individuals were imprisoned solely for exercising their right to free speech. An additional 208 people were allegedly blackmailed under the guise of legal proceedings, and numerous others faced restrictions on their professional activities.

According to The Wire, the Indian government has tightened controls over media outlets and social media platforms, creating an environment of increased pressure and limited freedom of expression. Journalists and media personnel covering public affairs, political events, and government activities reportedly faced threats, violence, and other legal obstacles in the course of their reporting.

The Wire described the government’s measures as “restrictions on freedom of expression,” while also revealing the influence of extremist elements and state strategies that further exacerbate the risks to media professionals.
Experts warn that the persistent clampdown on press freedom not only undermines journalistic principles but also restricts citizens’ access to information, transparency, and accountability. The widespread intimidation of journalists could erode public trust in media and limit critical reporting on governance and social issues.
The report comes amid growing international concern over press freedoms in South Asia, with organizations urging the Indian government to uphold democratic norms and protect journalists from harassment, violence, and legal persecution.
