Iran(The COW News Digital)Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reportedly intercepted a US-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, prompting heightened tensions in one of the world’s most strategic waterways. Iranian authorities stated that the vessel entered Iranian territorial waters without prior authorization and was warned to leave the area. Following the warnings, the ship reportedly exited Iranian waters without further incident.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the incident, stating that IRGC boats approached the vessel, attempted to block its path, and harassed the crew. A CENTCOM spokesperson said Iranian drones were also present and issued threats to seize the ship.

In a related escalation, a US Navy aircraft carrier-based F-35C fighter jet reportedly shot down an Iranian Shahed-139 drone that approached the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Gulf. Officials described the drone as a potential threat to US forces in the region.

CENTCOM emphasized that the US is monitoring maritime security closely and remains committed to ensuring the free navigation of commercial and military vessels in international waters. The military command also condemned aggressive actions by Iranian forces targeting US-flagged ships.

Iran has frequently challenged foreign naval vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global oil shipments. The latest incident highlights ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, especially amid concerns over Iran’s military activities in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters.

Experts say the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes, remains a flashpoint for potential conflict. Any escalation could have serious implications for global energy markets and regional security.

The US Navy has increased patrols in the region to deter aggressive maneuvers, while Iran has reiterated its stance on defending its territorial waters. Analysts note that both sides are seeking to avoid a direct confrontation, though incidents like these underline the fragility of maritime stability in the Gulf.

This confrontation adds to a series of recent incidents involving Iranian drones and naval forces challenging US and allied vessels. US officials have stressed that all measures are taken in self-defense and to maintain international navigation rights.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz will continue to be closely monitored by both military and diplomatic channels as tensions persist in the region.
