Brussels(The COW News Digital) NATO’s Secretary General has stated that Europe is currently not capable of ensuring its own security without the support of the United States, highlighting the continued central role of Washington in the alliance’s collective defense framework.

Addressing the European Parliament in Brussels, the NATO chief said that the idea of Europe or the European Union independently guaranteeing its own security remains unrealistic under present conditions. He described such expectations as aspirational rather than practical, stressing that transatlantic cooperation remains the backbone of Europe’s defense architecture.

The remarks come at a time when debates over strategic autonomy and defense spending are intensifying across Europe. Several EU member states have been discussing the need to strengthen their military capabilities and reduce reliance on external partners. However, the NATO chief cautioned that despite these discussions, Europe still lacks the integrated military capacity, resources, and coordination needed to stand alone.

During his speech, the NATO chief also addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, calling for sustained and expanded support. He urged European lawmakers to allow a portion of a proposed 90-billion-euro loan package for Ukraine to be spent on military equipment. According to him, strengthening Ukraine’s defensive capabilities is essential not only for Kyiv’s security but also for the broader stability of Europe.

He emphasized that the United States remains fully committed to NATO’s principle of collective defense, dismissing concerns that Washington may scale back its role in the alliance. “The US commitment to NATO is strong and unwavering,” he said, adding that American military presence and leadership continue to be critical deterrents against external threats.

Security experts say the statement underscores a strategic reality that has shaped European defense policy for decades. While European countries have increased defense budgets since the Ukraine war began, the US still provides key capabilities, including intelligence, advanced weaponry, and rapid deployment forces.

Critics, however, argue that such dependence exposes Europe to political uncertainty, particularly during periods of shifting US domestic priorities. They believe the comments may reignite calls within the EU for deeper defense integration and long-term investment in independent military capabilities.

Despite differing views, NATO officials maintain that unity between Europe and the United States is essential in the current global security environment. With rising geopolitical tensions and ongoing conflicts near Europe’s borders, alliance leaders insist that transatlantic solidarity remains the most effective guarantee of peace and deterrence.
