“If I were in Israel’s position, I would do the same,” Graham stated. He defended the measures, arguing that Israel faces existential threats and must take decisive action to protect its citizens. “We destroyed every city during World War II to defeat the Germans. It was war. Do you think we hesitated for a second?” he added.
When asked about comparing the events of October 7 in Gaza to World War II, Graham said, “Absolutely. The Jewish state was under threat. We turned Berlin and Tokyo into rubble. Dropping atomic bombs ended Japan’s period of violence—was that wrong?” He emphasized that military success is essential to countering radicalism.
Graham further suggested that most Republican lawmakers share his perspective. “I believe the majority of Republicans think the same way I do,” he said, highlighting the party’s general alignment on supporting Israel’s security measures.
The senator’s remarks come amid international scrutiny over civilian casualties in Gaza. Human rights organizations and global leaders have condemned attacks that disproportionately affect children and non-combatants. Critics argue that such actions could exacerbate regional tensions and undermine prospects for long-term peace.
Supporters of Graham’s stance, however, maintain that Israel has the right to defend itself against militant groups that threaten its population. They argue that drawing lessons from historical conflicts is necessary to understand the stakes involved in modern warfare.
Graham’s comments also underscore a broader debate within U.S. politics regarding the balance between strategic military support for allies and adherence to international humanitarian standards. While the Republican Party generally advocates for strong backing of Israel, these statements have sparked controversy domestically and internationally.
As discussions continue, the Gaza conflict remains a flashpoint in global geopolitics, with U.S. lawmakers’ positions influencing diplomatic responses and foreign aid considerations.
