Copenhagen(The COW News Digital) Denmark has issued a strong warning to the United States, stating that any military attack on Greenland would be met with an immediate armed response, without waiting for further political directives.
Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, in a firm statement, said that Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and that its security is non-negotiable. He warned that if Greenland were attacked, Danish armed forces would respond instantly. “There will be no delay. Action will be taken first, and questions can come later,” he said, underlining Denmark’s commitment to defending the island.
The remarks come amid rising international debate over Greenland’s strategic importance, particularly in the context of global missile defense and Arctic security. Greenland, the world’s largest island, holds significant geopolitical value due to its location between North America and Europe and its proximity to emerging Arctic shipping routes.

Earlier, seven European countries issued a joint statement affirming that decisions regarding Greenland’s future and security rest solely with Greenland and Denmark. The statement emphasized respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, signaling Europe’s unified stance against external pressure.
Tensions escalated further after US Vice President J.D. Vance warned European leaders that Washington could take action if Europe failed to adequately address Greenland’s security needs. He argued that Greenland plays a critical role in global missile defense systems and claimed that rival powers have shown growing interest in the region.
Vance’s comments revived concerns in Europe over Washington’s increasingly assertive rhetoric on Arctic affairs. While the United States maintains a military presence in Greenland through the Thule Air Base, Denmark has stressed that any expansion of military activity must occur through diplomatic channels and mutual agreement.
Danish officials reiterated that Denmark takes Arctic security seriously and continues to invest in defense capabilities in cooperation with NATO allies. However, they cautioned that unilateral actions or threats undermine regional stability and international norms.
Greenland’s leadership has also emphasized its right to self-determination, rejecting any notion of external control or military pressure. Greenlandic officials have consistently stated that while cooperation with allies is welcome, sovereignty remains paramount.
The situation highlights growing geopolitical competition in the Arctic, where climate change, security interests, and resource exploration are reshaping global priorities. As tensions rise, Denmark has called for dialogue, restraint, and respect for international law to prevent further escalation.
