Nepal(The COW News Digital)Authorities in Nepal have imposed a curfew in the southern border city of Birgunj after violent unrest erupted following an attack on a mosque and the desecration of religious texts. The incident has heightened communal tensions in the area, prompting security forces to take emergency measures to restore order.
According to international news agencies, the situation deteriorated after a video circulated widely on TikTok that allegedly contained content offensive to religious sentiments. The video quickly went viral, inflaming emotions and acting as a catalyst for unrest in the city, which has a mixed population of Muslim and Hindu communities.
Police officials said two youths responsible for creating and sharing the video were detained with the assistance of local residents. Authorities initially attempted to defuse the situation through mediation and dialogue, but tensions escalated despite these efforts. Shortly afterward, a mosque was vandalized, and religious books were reportedly desecrated, triggering widespread anger within the Muslim community.

Large-scale protests broke out in response, with demonstrators condemning the attack and demanding swift justice. As tensions grew, members of the Hindu community also took to the streets, leading to clashes between groups. Protesters blocked roads by burning tires and chanting slogans, bringing daily life in parts of the city to a standstill.
Police responded by deploying additional personnel and using tear gas to disperse crowds. Several protesters were taken into custody during the clashes, and some police officers sustained injuries while attempting to control the situation. Despite these measures, unrest continued to spread, making it increasingly difficult for authorities to maintain control.
As violence threatened to spiral further, local administrators imposed a curfew across sensitive areas of Birgunj. The curfew was initially enforced from the evening hours but was later extended due to ongoing tensions. Officials have allowed limited relaxation of restrictions for a few hours to enable residents to purchase essential goods.
Security forces remain on high alert, with checkpoints established across the city to prevent further incidents. Police have also increased patrols around religious sites to deter any additional acts of vandalism or violence.
In an effort to calm the situation, senior police officials held meetings with prominent Muslim and Hindu community leaders, urging restraint and cooperation. Authorities have appealed to the public to avoid spreading unverified content on social media and to maintain peace while investigations continue.
The incident has renewed concerns about the role of social media in fueling communal tensions in the region. Officials said strict action would be taken against those found responsible for inciting violence, stressing that maintaining harmony and public safety remains the government’s top priority.
