National ( The cow news digital ) In a concerning update on urban security, crime statistics in Karachi have shown a noticeable rise during the month of April, according to data released by the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC). The report highlights an increase in street crimes, vehicle theft, and mobile phone snatching incidents, raising fresh concerns about law and order in Pakistan’s largest city.
According to the official figures, 42 citizens were killed in various incidents during April, slightly lower than 44 recorded in March. Despite this minor decline in fatalities, other categories of crime witnessed an upward trend, particularly street-level offenses that continue to impact daily life for residents.
Mobile phone snatching cases recorded a sharp increase, with 1,624 incidents reported in April compared to 1,265 in March. This reflects a growing pattern of street crime, especially in densely populated and commercially active areas of the city. Authorities have noted that such incidents often occur in broad daylight, targeting pedestrians and commuters.
Motorcycle snatching also increased, with 469 cases reported in April, up from 440 in the previous month. Similarly, car snatching incidents rose from 17 in March to 22 in April, indicating that organized criminal activity targeting vehicles remains a persistent issue.
However, some categories showed slight improvement. Motorcycle theft cases declined from 3,027 in March to 2,723 in April, while car theft also decreased from 140 to 111 reported incidents. Despite this reduction, the overall crime environment remains a significant concern for law enforcement agencies.
The CPLC report further noted 9 cases of extortion during the month and one reported incident of kidnapping for ransom. Although these figures are relatively low compared to street crimes, they underline the continued presence of serious criminal networks operating in the city.
Law enforcement authorities are under increasing pressure to address the rising crime rate, particularly street crimes that directly affect citizens’ sense of safety. Security analysts suggest that a combination of economic challenges, limited policing resources, and organized gangs contributes to the ongoing situation.
Citizens are calling for stronger preventive measures, improved patrolling, and enhanced use of technology to curb criminal activities across Karachi.
