ISLAMABAD — In a decisive move to stabilize domestic food security and counter fluctuating grain supplies, the federal government of Pakistan has officially approved the import of one million tonnes of wheat. Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, announced that the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet is set to finalize the execution framework next week, determining whether the procurement will be managed strictly through the public sector or extended to private sector channels.
The strategic decision follows comprehensive demand assessments submitted by various provincial administrations to address regional supply deficits. According to the federal minister, Punjab has registered a specific requirement for 800,000 tonnes, Sindh has requested 700,000 tonnes, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) has highlighted a demand for 500,000 tonnes. The cumulative regional demands underline an urgent national necessity to replenish state reserves and prevent potential market volatility.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to chair a high-level consultative session next week to finalize the operational modalities, logistics, and distribution timelines. Officials emphasize that transparency and strict adherence to provincial quotas will remain central to the import strategy to ensure equitable access across all federating units.
