Beijing(The COW News Digital)China has urged the United States and Iran to de-escalate tensions and immediately resume negotiations under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreed upon in June.
Speaking during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that a prolonged conflict between the US and Iran serves neither the interests of the involved parties nor the international community. Wang Yi emphasized the need to restore diplomatic dialogue, respect territorial sovereignty, and protect vital international shipping lanes, particularly calling for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to safeguard global energy supply chains. He further noted that Beijing opposes the expansion of regional hostilities into Yemen and the Red Sea.
In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi affirmed Tehran’s willingness to pursue a diplomatic resolution while safeguarding its national sovereignty. Araghchi stated that Iran still considers the Islamabad MoU valid and highlighted a proposed initiative with Oman to establish a secure navigation route in the Strait of Hormuz, contingent upon the US fulfilling its commitments.
The Islamabad MoU, brokered by Pakistan in June 2026, acts as an interim framework designed to halt hostilities, lift the US naval blockade on Iranian ports within 30 days, and guarantee safe commercial passage through the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days.
