NEW YORK(The COW News Digital) Iran has reportedly presented a set of conditions to the United States for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing diplomatic contacts between Tehran and Washington during the United Nations General Assembly session in New York.
According to Iranian state media, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi conveyed Tehran’s position during a meeting with US Special Representative Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The reported contact comes as both sides continue efforts to communicate their positions amid tensions surrounding the strategic waterway.
Iranian media reports said Tehran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz include an immediate end to what Iran describes as a US naval blockade, the release of frozen Iranian assets and an end to military hostilities across what Iranian officials refer to as the various “resistance fronts.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei also confirmed that Tehran’s message had been communicated to Washington through Qatari mediation in New York.
Baghaei said Iran was seeking an end to hostilities on all fronts, a halt to US military operations, an end to the naval blockade and economic pressure, as well as the return of Iranian assets. His comments outlined the issues Tehran considers important for any potential move towards reopening the waterway.
Iran has previously indicated that it could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within roughly a week if US military pressure and the reported blockade are reduced.
The developments come as diplomatic contacts continue between Iran and the United States. US President Donald Trump has described the ongoing contacts in New York as positive, saying discussions between Washington and Tehran are continuing and expressing hope that an agreement could eventually be reached.
However, significant differences remain between the two sides over the conditions for reducing tensions and resolving the wider dispute. Neither side has announced a final agreement on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The waterway is strategically important to global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and serves as a major maritime route for the transportation of crude oil, petroleum products and other energy supplies.
Any prolonged disruption to shipping through the strait could therefore have implications for international energy markets, shipping and regional trade. Conversely, a reopening or restoration of normal maritime traffic could ease concerns surrounding energy supplies and commercial transportation.
The latest diplomatic developments are being closely monitored as officials from both countries continue to communicate through direct and indirect channels. Qatar’s reported mediation reflects the involvement of regional partners in efforts to facilitate communication between Tehran and Washington.
For now, Iran’s reported conditions and the US position remain subject to further negotiations. The outcome of the diplomatic contacts in New York could determine whether the two sides move closer to an arrangement concerning the Strait of Hormuz and the broader regional situation.
