ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s federal government debt has experienced a staggering increase of over Rs 18.83 trillion during the initial 28 months of the current administration, according to official documents released by the State Bank of Pakistan.

Data reveals that from March 2024 through June 2026, the federal government’s total debt accumulated at an alarming average of more than Rs 22.40 billion per day.

By the conclusion of the caretaker setup in February 2024, the federal government’s total debt stood at Rs 64.81 trillion. However, following a relentless surge over the subsequent 28-month period, the total national debt escalated to Rs 83.64 trillion by the end of June 2026.

A breakdown of the figures highlights a massive expansion in domestic borrowing alongside an increase in external liabilities:

  • Domestic Debt: Stood at Rs 42.67 trillion in February 2024, surging significantly to Rs 59.44 trillion by June 2026.
  • External Debt: Rose from Rs 22.13 trillion in February 2024 to Rs 24.20 trillion by June 2026.

Economic analysts note that this rapid accumulation of debt underscores persisting fiscal challenges and soaring expenditures, which continue to place intense pressure on the national economy.
