Neepal(The COW News Digital)A 64-year-old woman has been rescued alive after spending nearly 10 days trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in Nepal, in a remarkable rescue operation that has drawn attention amid the country’s devastating flood disaster.
The woman, identified as Chandrika Shrestha, was found buried under the remains of a four-storey house in the Baitrawati area of Nuwakot district. Rescue workers reportedly heard her voice coming from beneath the debris, prompting an immediate operation to locate and free her.
After a difficult rescue effort, officials managed to pull Shrestha out alive. She was subsequently airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment and further examination.
The rescue came as a rare moment of hope following widespread destruction caused by severe flooding in Nepal. On the same day, a Chinese national was also reportedly rescued alive after remaining trapped for around 10 days inside a tunnel at a hydropower project.
The two rescues have highlighted the challenges faced by emergency teams working in areas affected by the disaster, where collapsed structures, blocked roads and damaged infrastructure have complicated search-and-rescue operations.
The disaster followed a glacier collapse that triggered devastating floods across affected areas. More than 1,300 people have reportedly died, while thousands of others remain missing. Authorities fear the death toll could rise further as rescue teams continue searching through damaged buildings and isolated areas.
