Washington (The COW News Digital)Former CIA Director and retired US General David Petraeus has warned that maintaining American military bases across the Middle East is becoming increasingly difficult as regional security threats evolve and low-cost drone warfare changes the nature of modern conflicts.
Speaking to Global Gambit, Petraeus discussed the growing vulnerability of US military installations and critical infrastructure in the Gulf amid escalating tensions with Iran. He said American bases that once provided significant strategic advantages are now facing new challenges as adversaries develop cheaper and more effective methods of targeting military facilities.
Petraeus also raised concerns about the sustainability of America’s air-defence capabilities. He said the United States may have already used around half of its missile interceptors during the ongoing confrontation with Iran, highlighting the financial and logistical pressures associated with defending military installations against repeated attacks.
According to the former CIA chief, Washington needs to reconsider its approach to air defence by placing greater emphasis on affordable drones, counter-drone systems and modern battlefield strategies rather than relying heavily on expensive missile interceptors.
Petraeus pointed to the war in Ukraine as an important example of how inexpensive unmanned aerial vehicles can be used against high-value targets. Ukrainian forces have reportedly employed large numbers of low-cost drones against Russian oil storage facilities, refineries and energy infrastructure, demonstrating how relatively inexpensive weapons can create significant military and economic pressure.
He argued that the cost imbalance between offensive drones and defensive missiles presents a major challenge. A drone costing roughly $50,000 can force an opponent to use a far more expensive interceptor, a model that could become increasingly difficult to sustain during a prolonged conflict.
The remarks come amid reports of attacks or threats involving several American military facilities across the Middle East. Installations in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iraq have reportedly been identified in connection with recent regional tensions.
The reported facilities include King Hussein Base, Prince Hassan Air Base and Al Azraq Air Base in Jordan, along with Ahmed Al Jaber and Ali Al Salem air bases in Kuwait. US military assets linked to the Fifth Fleet in Bahrain have also been mentioned.
In the United Arab Emirates, Al Minhad and Al Dhafra air bases have been cited, while US facilities in Erbil, Iraq, have also reportedly faced threats.
Qatar’s Al Udeid Air Base remains particularly significant. It is regarded as one of the largest US military installations in the Middle East and serves as a major regional hub for American military operations.
Petraeus’s comments reflect a wider debate over the future of US military deployments in the region and whether traditional large-scale bases remain suitable in an era increasingly shaped by drones, precision strikes and rapidly changing military technology.
