A new IndiGo passenger aircraft was damaged after colliding with a visual docking guidance system pole while preparing to park at Srinagar Airport, in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The incident involved IndiGo flight 6E-225, which had arrived in Srinagar from Mumbai. The aircraft reportedly struck the docking guidance equipment at around 9:02am while moving toward its designated parking position.
The aircraft involved was an Airbus A321 that had reportedly entered service only around four months earlier. The collision damaged the aircraft’s nose cone, although the extent of the overall damage was not immediately disclosed.
The visual docking guidance system is designed to assist pilots in safely positioning aircraft at parking stands. The equipment includes laser sensors and a display unit that provides guidance to the flight crew during the final stages of aircraft parking.
Despite the collision, all passengers and crew members on board remained safe. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Passengers and crew were subsequently evacuated from the aircraft safely using ordinary aircraft stairs. Airport authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the collision.
The incident has drawn attention because of the relatively new age of the aircraft and the location of the collision during what is normally a routine parking procedure. Aviation authorities are expected to examine the aircraft’s movement, cockpit procedures, ground guidance equipment and other operational factors as part of the investigation.
The event comes amid renewed scrutiny of aviation safety procedures and pilot operations in India following several recent incidents involving commercial aircraft.
Investigators will determine whether the collision was caused by a human error, a problem with the visual docking guidance system, visibility or another operational factor. Further technical details are expected to emerge once the investigation is completed.
While the aircraft sustained damage to its front section, the absence of injuries meant the incident did not result in casualties. Authorities are now assessing the aircraft and airport equipment before determining the next steps.
The incident also highlights the importance of accurate ground guidance and strict adherence to aircraft parking procedures, particularly when operating large passenger jets in confined airport areas.
