Bollywood actress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut has reignited a massive political and social media storm after doubling down on her controversial “Generation Gutter” remarks directed at youth protesters.
The controversy originated following demonstrations held in New Delhi by the student-led Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) over examination paper leaks. During the peak of the agitation, Ranaut posted severe criticisms on social media, describing digital reels and footage from the protests as crass and “puke-inducing,” while labelling a segment of the participants as the “gutter generation”. Her initial statements drew fierce condemnation from opposition leaders, public figures, and internet users alike. Although she briefly offered a softer tone by acknowledging the awareness of modern youth, the actor has now firmly defended her choice of words during a media interaction.
Clarifying her stance, Ranaut argued that her comments were not a blanket statement targeting all young individuals or Gen Z as a whole, but were specifically aimed at those who chose inflammatory titles. “Those who call themselves cockroaches, and we say that cockroaches emerge from gutters, what is wrong with that?” she remarked during an interview. The actor asserted that if individuals consciously label themselves with such imagery, associating their environment with a gutter is a natural deduction. She added that while she would vehemently reject any claim suggesting she lives in such conditions, those who embrace unconventional self-designations cannot object to the corresponding metaphors.
The renewed remarks have triggered immediate backlash, with political critics and legal bodies stepping forward. Legal challenges have already been initiated against the parliamentarian in local courts over the derogatory phrasing used against student demonstrators. As discussions surrounding freedom of speech, political accountability, and the conduct of public figures continue to dominate news cycles, the controversy highlights the growing friction between political representatives and youth-led activist movements across the nation.
