US President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping decision to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on imported unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and their core components, citing critical national security measures and a push to strengthen domestic manufacturing.
According to an official White House statement released in Washington, the new trade restrictions target specific categories of imported drone systems. Unmanned aerial systems weighing over 25 kilograms—particularly those equipped with advanced capabilities such as thermal imagers and automated docking stations—will face a steep 100 percent import duty. Meanwhile, smaller drones and lighter commercial models will be subject to a 25 percent tariff. Most of these new trade tariffs are scheduled to officially take effect starting September 3.
The White House emphasized that the primary objective behind these aggressive trade steps is to dramatically boost domestic production of drones and critical parts within the United States, thereby reducing reliance on vulnerable foreign supply chains. This announcement follows closely on the heels of a broader tariff package applied by Washington against China and several other trading partners. In response to prior US export controls and trade curbs linked to national security concerns, Beijing recently retaliated by announcing export restrictions on drone technology and blacklisting select American-linked entities.
