World ( The cow news digital ) At least eight people were killed and more than 34 others injured after Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and surrounding areas ahead of a NATO summit in Türkiye, according to Ukrainian officials.
The strikes caused significant damage to residential buildings and triggered fires in several parts of the city, prompting emergency services to carry out rescue and firefighting operations. Authorities said civilians were among those affected, while hospitals admitted dozens of injured victims, some of whom were reported to be in critical condition.
According to international media reports, seven fatalities were recorded in Kyiv, while another person was killed in Bucha district, northwest of the capital. Rescue teams continued searching damaged buildings for possible survivors as emergency crews worked to secure affected neighborhoods.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the city’s air defense systems were activated during the attack and successfully intercepted several incoming missiles. He urged residents to remain in shelters and follow official safety instructions until the threat had passed.
The head of Kyiv’s regional military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, confirmed that Russia used ballistic missiles in the assault, adding that multiple residential areas sustained damage. Emergency response teams remained deployed across the region to assist victims and assess the destruction.
The attack marks the second major missile strike on Kyiv and its surrounding areas in less than a week, highlighting the continued intensity of the conflict as Russia maintains pressure on Ukraine’s capital.
The missile barrage came just before the opening of the NATO leaders’ summit in Türkiye, where the war in Ukraine is expected to dominate discussions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is anticipated to hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on military assistance, defense cooperation, and efforts to revive peace negotiations.
Reports also suggest that President Trump could hold a separate conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin following the summit as part of broader diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and restarting stalled negotiations.
