World ( The cow news digital ) Renowned Indian social activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk has officially ended his 26-day hunger strike, which he undertook to support youth protesters demanding comprehensive educational reforms following national examination controversies.
Wangchuk, widely respected as “Sonam Sir,” announced his decision via social media, stating that he chose to call off the fast following extensive negotiations with officials and to prevent potential civil unrest across the region. During his prolonged hunger strike, the 59-year-old activist experienced significant physical deterioration, reporting an 11-kilogram weight loss before law enforcement forcibly removed him from the protest site in Delhi and admitted him to a hospital.
The activist’s fast was observed in solidarity with youth protesters protesting the recent National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak controversy. Protesters continue to demand structural educational reforms and the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged systemic failures and administrative mismanagement.
Government representatives, including Ministers of State and health officials, visited Wangchuk at the hospital, providing official assurances that peaceful demonstrators at Jantar Mantar would not face legal prosecution. Following these guarantees, Wangchuk ended his strike, though organizing student groups affirmed that peaceful assemblies demanding political accountability will persist until their primary core objectives are addressed.
