Daily Coffee May Lower Serious Liver Disease Risk

World ( The cow news digital ) Drinking coffee every day may do more than improve alertness and concentration, as new research suggests it could significantly reduce the risk of developing serious liver diseases, including liver cancer.

The findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, indicate that regular coffee consumption is associated with a lower likelihood of severe liver conditions and a reduced risk of death related to liver disease.

The large-scale study followed more than 350,000 participants between the ages of 40 and 69. Researchers enrolled the volunteers between 2006 and 2010, ensuring that none had pre-existing liver disease or liver cancer at the beginning of the study. Participants were asked about their coffee-drinking habits before researchers monitored their health over an average period of 13 years.

During the follow-up, scientists tracked cases of liver disease, liver cancer, and deaths linked to liver-related illnesses. The results showed that individuals who consumed five or more cups of coffee daily experienced the greatest health benefits.

According to the study, heavy coffee drinkers had a 32 percent lower risk of developing liver fibrosis, a condition marked by the hardening and scarring of liver tissue. They also showed a 47 percent lower risk of liver cancer and a 42 percent reduction in the risk of dying from liver disease compared with those who drank little or no coffee.

Researchers noted that moderate coffee consumption also appeared beneficial. Drinking between one and four cups per day was linked to a measurable reduction in the risk of several liver disorders, although the protective effects were stronger among those who consumed higher amounts.

The study further found that regular coffee intake was associated with lower levels of liver fat, reduced iron accumulation, and decreased inflammation—factors known to contribute to long-term liver damage.

Scientists believe coffee contains natural compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, both of which play a key role in the development of liver disease.

While the findings are encouraging, researchers emphasized that coffee should be viewed as part of a healthy lifestyle rather than a substitute for medical care or preventive health measures. Maintaining a balanced diet, limiting alcohol consumption, exercising regularly, and seeking routine medical check-ups remain essential for protecting liver health.
