National ( The cow news digital ): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a Rs23 billion development package for South Punjab’s Katcha area, aimed at improving infrastructure, public services, and economic opportunities for residents in the underdeveloped region.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister, where several major initiatives were approved under the Katcha Area Development Program. According to an official statement, the government plans to construct schools, hospitals, roads, and bridges across the region to improve living conditions and strengthen connectivity.
As part of the initiative, Maryam Nawaz also introduced the “Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar” program for residents of the Katcha area. Under this scheme, 14,500 acres of government land will be allocated to local people to promote agricultural activities and generate sustainable livelihoods.
The Punjab government has also directed relevant authorities to provide transport services and mobile healthcare facilities, including clinic-on-wheel services, to improve access to medical care in remote areas. Additionally, mobile veterinary hospitals and laboratories will be introduced to support livestock owners and rural communities.
In a major move to improve law and order, the government has launched solar-powered drone surveillance in the Katcha region for the first time. Police stations and checkpoints in the area will also be connected to Safe City monitoring systems to strengthen security and improve emergency response.
According to the official statement, Rs7.1 billion will be allocated specifically for peace and security measures in the Katcha belt, while Rs13.9 billion will be spent on social infrastructure projects.
The development package also includes educational support initiatives. Around 6,551 female students will receive school meal milk packs, while 300 students will be awarded merit-based scholarships under the Honhaar Scholarship Program. Another 300 students will receive laptops to support their academic development.
The Katcha area, which has historically faced challenges including underdevelopment, poor infrastructure, and law and order concerns, is expected to benefit significantly from the newly announced projects.
Government officials stated that the development plan reflects Punjab’s commitment to improving conditions in neglected regions and ensuring equal development opportunities for all communities.
The latest initiative is being viewed as a major step toward addressing longstanding social and economic issues in South Punjab, with authorities hopeful that the projects will contribute to regional stability and sustainable growth.
