National ( The cow news digital ) The Pakistan cricket team is reportedly considering a major selection change ahead of the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against Australia, with experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan likely to be dropped from the squad.
According to sources, discussions between the selection committee, head coach Mike Hesson, and captain Shaheen Shah Afridi are underway regarding team composition for the three-match ODI series. Reports suggest that Rizwan is not strongly favored for inclusion in the final lineup, marking a potential shift in Pakistan’s wicketkeeping strategy.
Coach Mike Hesson is believed to be in favor of testing new wicketkeeping options in both T20 and ODI formats, signaling a possible transition phase in the national team setup. The move is seen as part of a broader effort to rebuild and experiment with younger talent ahead of future international tournaments.
Rizwan, 33, has been one of Pakistan’s most consistent performers in ODI cricket. He has played 103 matches, scoring 2,979 runs at an average of 40.08, including four centuries and 19 half-centuries. Behind the stumps, he has also contributed significantly with 113 catches and seven stumpings, making him one of Pakistan’s most reliable wicketkeepers in recent years.
In recent matches, however, selectors appear to be exploring alternative options. Reports suggest that emerging players such as Ghazi Ghori, who recently made his ODI debut, may be considered for the squad. Other contenders for the backup wicketkeeper role include Usman Khan and Mirza Saad Baig, with one of them likely to be selected depending on final team requirements.
The Australian cricket team is scheduled to arrive in Islamabad on May 23, while Pakistan’s squad is set to begin training in Rawalpindi from May 22. A practice match is also planned as part of preparations for the series.
The ODI series between Pakistan and Australia will be played on May 30, June 2, and June 4, marking an important bilateral contest as both teams prepare for upcoming international commitments.
The final squad announcement is expected after the completion of training sessions and final selection meetings.
