National ( The cow news digital ) Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to exercise stronger control over his federal cabinet, warning that internal inconsistencies and controversial statements by ministers could create increasing governance challenges over time.
Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, Bilawal said that while he appreciates the prime minister’s efforts to engage both coalition partners and the opposition in a constructive political manner, certain cabinet members are issuing statements that are complicating the government’s overall functioning. He stressed that such contradictions within the cabinet undermine policy coherence and political stability.
Bilawal referred to recent controversies involving federal ministers, stating that some remarks had escalated tensions rather than resolving them, particularly in relation to issues concerning Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He criticized a federal minister for allegedly worsening a sensitive situation instead of defusing it, and noted that the individual in question had not publicly apologized despite the controversy.
He further emphasized that a government cannot function effectively when ministers deliver conflicting messages. According to him, if a cabinet member makes statements that contradict the spirit of national unity or coalition agreements, it creates difficulties for both governance and political cooperation. He urged the prime minister to ensure discipline within his team to avoid further complications.
Addressing broader political issues, Bilawal also commented on governance in Karachi, arguing that many of the city’s problems stem not from the PPP but from federal cabinet members representing coalition partners. He claimed that miscommunication and contradictory positions within the government have hindered progress on urban governance reforms.
He further advocated for strengthening local government systems across Pakistan, stating that provinces where PPP governs have functional municipal structures, while other regions lack similar systems. He called for nationwide local body elections and suggested that Islamabad should also be given a more empowered mayoral system to ensure better service delivery.
Bilawal added that political agreements made within coalition frameworks should be respected and implemented in their true spirit. He also urged the government to pass the federal budget before the upcoming religious period to ensure legislative continuity.
Despite his criticism, the PPP chairman expressed hope that the prime minister would succeed in managing national affairs, stating that government success ultimately benefits the country as a whole.
