PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has issued a stern warning to the ruling authorities and decision-makers, urging them to open their eyes and restore the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law before September 27, warning that the current political situation will otherwise spiral out of control.
Speaking to the media during a sit-in outside the Supreme Court, CM Afridi expressed deep concern over alarming reports regarding the health of incarcerated founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan. He stated that the entire nation holds serious reservations about Mr. Khan’s well-being, stressing that neither PTI nor Imran Khan has ever politicized his medical condition for personal relief. Afridi demanded that the state display moral courage by immediately allowing Imran Khan’s personal physicians to examine him in the presence of his family.
Drawing historical comparisons, the Chief Minister recalled that during his tenure, Imran Khan permitted former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to travel abroad for medical treatment on humanitarian grounds, despite public questions surrounding medical certificates. “Today, Imran Khan is being systematically deprived of his fundamental human rights and basic justice, which is entirely unacceptable and deeply alarming,” Afridi remarked.
He asserted that Imran Khan remains unjustly imprisoned in fabricated political cases, while political opponents accused of massive corruption, laundering national wealth, and acquiring offshore properties walk free. Warning the tormentors of the inevitability of accountability, he stated that no one can escape the consequences of their actions.
Addressing the state of the judiciary, CM Afridi noted that Pakistan’s justice system is facing an unprecedented trial. He emphasized that if individual judges take a firm stand for justice, it will empower the entire judiciary. “The public pins all their hopes on the courts. If judges fail to deliver justice and abandon their oath-bound duties, where else can the common citizen turn?” he questioned.
Concluding his address, the Chief Minister warned that the revolutionary spark visible in the eyes of the youth cannot be contained if suppression continues. He cautioned that persistent state injustice and widening political polarization could soon reach a tipping point where even Imran Khan’s appeals for peace may fail to calm public fury. He reiterated his ultimatum for the ruling elite to reverse course and uphold constitutional supremacy before the September 27 deadline.
