Islamabad(The COW News Digital)Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced that it will not engage in any discussions regarding constitutional amendments until the draft text concerning Article 243 is made public. The party’s chairman, Barrister Gohar, emphasized that meaningful dialogue can only take place once the draft is officially released.
Speaking to the media, Barrister Gohar clarified that Article 243 pertains to the country’s armed forces. He noted that amendments related to this article had been proposed in the past, but stressed that any constitutional changes should be based on consensus rather than a simple majority. “The constitution is important because it belongs to the entire nation. Decisions should reflect broad agreement, not unilateral decisions by the majority,” he said.
Gohar also highlighted concerns about provincial rights and fiscal arrangements, referencing the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award. He stated that the NFC Award guaranteed that provinces would not receive less than their previous shares and ensured that federal authority would not be weakened. “Any amendment should maintain the balance between federal and provincial powers,” he added.
Meanwhile, PTI leader Asad Qaiser warned that the party will reject any amendment or bill presented by the government regarding Article 243. He questioned the parliamentary authority to make such legislation, asserting that the parliament does not have the right to enforce laws or amendments that contravene constitutional guarantees.
Political analysts say PTI’s stance could heighten tensions between the government and opposition, especially on sensitive matters involving the military and provincial rights. The party’s insistence on transparency and consensus before discussions could influence public perception and parliamentary debates in the coming weeks.
The issue comes amid ongoing discussions in Pakistan about constitutional reforms and governance, with Article 243 at the center of controversy due to its implications for the armed forces and federal-provincial relations.
