Karachi( The COW News Digital) Renowned Pakistani filmmaker Saifi Hasan has praised the Iranian film industry for producing remarkable cinema despite strict cultural and media restrictions. Speaking on a private TV morning show, Hasan highlighted how Iranian filmmakers manage to create compelling films even when actors wear dupatta and burqa, demonstrating the power of creativity under constraints.

Hasan stated that Iran’s cinema has carved a unique identity on the global stage, even though media and artistic expression face severe limitations. “Despite heavy restrictions, actors in Iran deliver extraordinary performances wearing dupatta and burqa, yet stunning films are still being made,” he said. Hasan added that this proves that artistic excellence can thrive even in challenging environments.

Drawing comparisons with Pakistan, Hasan said that the local film and drama industry also produces high-quality work. However, due to the sheer volume of content, outstanding projects often go unnoticed. He emphasized that although production houses usually make key decisions regarding lead roles to ensure profitability, directors’ opinions are still sought for creative input.

Hasan further stressed that he personally avoids working on projects that promote backward or regressive thinking, regardless of pressure or criticism from producers. “I do not compromise on the quality or message of my work. If a project reflects outdated or narrow-minded perspectives, I prefer not to participate, even if producers criticize me,” he explained.

He also reflected on Pakistan’s film history, noting that references are often made to the era of Zia-ul-Haq when actors performed under strict dress codes. “Even then, quality work was possible. Iran is currently demonstrating that similar restrictions do not limit artistic creativity,” Hasan remarked.

The filmmaker’s comments have sparked discussions about the potential for Pakistani cinema to gain international recognition by focusing on content quality rather than quantity. Hasan’s observations also underscore the importance of creative freedom, innovation, and maintaining cultural integrity while producing films that resonate with audiences both locally and globally.

Saifi Hasan’s praise for Iranian cinema serves as an inspiration for Pakistani filmmakers to continue pushing boundaries while staying true to artistic vision, even in restrictive environments.
