Dhaka(The COW News Digital)Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has directed the country’s armed forces to remain on the highest level of alert ahead of the upcoming referendum and national elections, underlining the sensitivity of the political process and the need for stability during this critical period.
According to official sources, the directive was issued during a high-level meeting at Army Headquarters, where Professor Yunus met senior military leadership to review security arrangements ahead of the February 12 referendum and the 13th national parliamentary elections scheduled for February 13. He described the forthcoming vote as a decisive moment for Bangladesh’s democratic future and stressed the importance of maintaining a transparent, peaceful, and credible electoral environment.
The Chief Adviser emphasized that the armed forces have a vital responsibility in safeguarding public confidence during the electoral process. He instructed them to remain fully prepared to respond to any security challenges that may arise before, during, or after the vote. At the same time, he reiterated that their role must remain strictly neutral and within the constitutional and legal framework.

Professor Yunus called on the military to provide full support to the Election Commission and the civil administration, ensuring that law and order are maintained without political bias. He noted that any lapse in professionalism or impartiality could undermine public trust and damage the legitimacy of the democratic process.
Referring to the upcoming referendum, the Chief Adviser said it would give citizens a direct opportunity to express their views on key issues related to the state’s future. The parliamentary elections, he added, would allow voters to choose their representatives freely, making it essential that both exercises are conducted in a secure and intimidation-free atmosphere.
Security analysts believe the decision to place the armed forces on high alert reflects concerns over potential unrest, political tensions, or attempts to disrupt the electoral process. Bangladesh has experienced periods of political volatility in the past, and authorities appear determined to prevent any repeat of instability during this crucial phase.
Officials within the interim administration stated that comprehensive security plans are being finalized, involving coordination between the military, police, and other law enforcement agencies.
