KYIV(The COW News Digital)The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that deteriorating electricity conditions in Ukraine are increasing risks to nuclear safety, as repeated military activity disrupts power infrastructure linked to nuclear facilities.
In a statement, the agency said that all but one of Ukraine’s reactor units had been forced to reduce output due to instability in the national power grid. Several electricity transmission lines were reportedly disconnected, raising concerns over the reliability of external power supplies essential for safe nuclear plant operations.
According to the IAEA, all Ukrainian nuclear power plants reported sightings of multiple drones within their monitoring perimeters, along with at least one cruise missile detected nearby. The agency’s team stationed at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant also reported hearing sounds consistent with military activity in the vicinity.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said such incidents are becoming increasingly frequent and underscore the persistent dangers posed by the fragile electricity situation. “Each event reminds us of the ever-present risks to nuclear safety and security stemming from the deteriorating power supply conditions,” Grossi said.
Stable off-site power is critical for cooling nuclear reactors and spent fuel pools, even when reactors are not operating at full capacity. Any prolonged disruption to the electricity network can compromise essential safety systems, heightening the possibility of a serious incident.
Grossi urged all parties involved in the conflict to exercise maximum military restraint near nuclear facilities, warning that a nuclear accident would have devastating consequences and serve no one’s interests. He emphasized that protecting nuclear safety must remain a top priority regardless of broader military developments.
Military activities over the past weekend reportedly affected operations at several nuclear power plants, adding further strain to an already stressed energy system. Ukraine’s power grid has faced repeated damage since the conflict escalated, complicating efforts to maintain stable electricity generation and distribution.
The IAEA continues to monitor conditions closely and maintain a presence at key sites, reiterating calls for the establishment of safety and security protections around nuclear installations. Analysts say the situation highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure during armed conflict and the global implications of any potential nuclear incident.
