Ukraine(The COW News Digital)Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has once again urged the United States to provide long-term security guarantees to Ukraine, calling for commitments lasting more than 15 years in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. The renewed demand comes as Kyiv continues diplomatic efforts to secure lasting protection against potential future aggression.
Speaking to journalists in Kyiv, President Zelenskyy said that US President Donald Trump has so far adopted a cautious stance on the issue of extended security guarantees. However, Zelenskyy expressed hope that a clearer response would emerge following their next meeting. He emphasized that Ukraine requires firm and long-lasting assurances to ensure national security beyond the immediate aftermath of any ceasefire agreement.

Zelenskyy revealed that he had raised the issue during his previous meeting with President Trump, stressing the importance of robust and reliable security commitments for Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian leader, short-term guarantees would not be sufficient to deter future military actions, particularly from Russia, which Ukraine considers its primary security threat.
The Ukrainian president has formally requested another meeting with Trump, stating that he wants to discuss what he described as the two most difficult issues in ongoing peace talks. These include the future status of the Donetsk region and control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, one of Europe’s largest nuclear facilities. Zelenskyy said these matters are critical to Ukraine’s sovereignty and long-term stability.
Discussions on long-term security arrangements are taking place at a time when Ukraine and its international partners are exploring post-war security frameworks. These proposals include the deployment of multinational forces, European Union-backed defense commitments, and bilateral security agreements with key allies. Ukrainian officials argue that such measures must extend over a significant period to be effective.
Kyiv maintains that temporary or limited security assurances would fail to prevent renewed hostilities. As a result, Ukraine is intensifying diplomatic pressure on its allies, particularly the United States, to commit to guarantees that would span at least 15 years. Ukrainian leaders believe such long-term commitments would act as a powerful deterrent and provide the stability needed for reconstruction and economic recovery.
The issue of security guarantees remains central to Ukraine’s broader strategy as it navigates peace negotiations while safeguarding its territorial integrity and political independence. Observers note that the outcome of these discussions could shape Ukraine’s security posture and its relationship with Western allies for decades to come.
