WhatsApp is rolling out an upgraded version of its disappearing messages feature aimed at strengthening user privacy and improving control over conversations, according to a report by WABetaInfo.

The new feature is currently being tested in beta versions on both Android and iOS devices. It introduces an “after-reading timer” system that changes how disappearing messages behave, making them more flexible and user-friendly.

Under the updated system, messages sent with this feature will remain visible until the recipient opens and reads them. Once viewed, the messages will automatically disappear after a selected time period, giving users more control over when their content is deleted.

At present, WhatsApp already offers disappearing messages that automatically vanish after predefined durations such as 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. However, this system has limitations, as messages may sometimes expire before being read by the recipient.

The new enhancement addresses this issue by ensuring that messages stay in the inbox until they are actually opened. After being read, the countdown timer begins, and the message is deleted once the selected time limit expires.

According to the report, users will be able to choose from multiple timer options, including 5 minutes, 1 hour, and 12 hours, depending on their preference for message privacy and urgency.

This update is expected to significantly improve private communication, especially for users who share sensitive or time-bound information. It also reflects WhatsApp’s broader push toward stronger privacy features and more granular control over messaging.

However, the feature is still in the testing phase, and it remains unclear when it will be released globally for all users. The company typically rolls out such updates gradually after evaluating feedback from beta testers.

With this development, WhatsApp continues to expand its privacy-focused tools in an increasingly competitive messaging app market.
