PTA Proposes 15-Year Local Registration for Major OTT Services

1 Min Read

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has proposed a new regulatory framework requiring major over-the-top (OTT) streaming services, including platforms like Netflix and YouTube, to obtain a 15-year local registration to operate in the country. The proposal is aimed at increasing oversight, ensuring compliance with local laws, and promoting accountability among digital content providers.

Industry stakeholders have raised concerns about the long registration period, warning that it could discourage new entrants and potentially stifle innovation in the rapidly growing OTT sector. Critics argue that such stringent regulations may favor established players while limiting competition and diversity in content offerings.

PTA officials, however, have stated that the feedback from all stakeholders will be considered before finalizing the framework. The authority aims to strike a balance between regulation and industry growth. A final decision on the policy is expected in the coming months.
