DOHA (The COW News Digital) Iran has received the latest US response to a proposed seven-day trust-building plan through Qatari mediators, marking a new development in indirect diplomatic contacts between Tehran and Washington.
According to Iranian officials familiar with the discussions, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met Qatari mediators in Doha on Tuesday night. During the meeting, he was briefed on Washington’s position regarding the proposal presented by Iran.
Araqchi is expected to return to Tehran and consult with Iran’s leadership on the US response. The outcome of those consultations could help determine Iran’s next position in the ongoing diplomatic process.
The main disagreement between the two sides reportedly concerns the sequence in which the proposed measures would be implemented.
The seven-day plan is aimed at building confidence between Iran and the United States and creating conditions for broader negotiations. The proposal is also linked to efforts to revive and improve an understanding reached between the two countries in June.
Iran had previously presented its proposal to Washington through Qatar. Under the plan, Tehran proposed allowing normal maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if certain conditions were met, followed by wider negotiations between the two sides.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a central issue in the indirect discussions because of its importance to international shipping and energy supplies. Other matters reportedly under discussion include economic sanctions and future negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
Iranian officials have maintained that progress in negotiations depends on Washington meeting Tehran’s conditions. Araqchi has also said that Iran was awaiting a clear response from the United States before determining its next steps.
US President Donald Trump had previously rejected the Iranian proposal, but indirect communication between Washington and Tehran has continued through Qatar.
Qatar has played a key role in transmitting messages between the two sides and facilitating diplomatic contacts. Qatari officials have indicated that efforts are continuing to keep communication channels open and move the negotiations forward.
The latest meeting in Doha therefore represents another stage in the indirect diplomatic process, although it does not indicate that a final agreement has been reached.
Following his discussions with Qatari mediators, Araqchi’s consultations in Tehran are expected to focus on the details of the US response and the conditions attached to any potential next step.
