Islamabad (The COW News Digital ) Pakistan is observing Defence and Martyrs Day today with national pride, unity and renewed resolve to honour the soldiers and civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s defence.
The day began with traditional gun salutes, with 31 rounds fired in Islamabad and 21 rounds in each provincial capital. Special prayers were also offered in mosques across the country after Fajr for the martyrs of September 6, with prayers for the elevation of their ranks and for the peace and prosperity of Pakistan.
September 6 holds a significant place in Pakistan’s history as it commemorates the events of the 1965 war between Pakistan and India. The day is remembered for the courage displayed by Pakistan’s armed forces and the support extended by citizens during a critical period in the country’s history.
The 1965 conflict was rooted in longstanding tensions over Kashmir. Following clashes in the Rann of Kutch, tensions between the two countries escalated sharply. On September 6, Indian forces launched a major offensive towards Lahore, advancing with infantry, tanks and artillery.
Pakistani troops mounted strong resistance to halt the advance. Soldiers of the Sutlej Rangers played a crucial role in defending strategic positions and contributed to efforts to restrict the Indian advance towards Lahore. Major Aziz Bhatti Shaheed, who was later awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, became one of the most prominent symbols of bravery during the Lahore front.
The Sialkot sector also witnessed one of the major tank battles of the conflict at Chawinda. Indian forces launched a large-scale offensive involving tanks and troops in an attempt to break through Pakistani positions. Pakistani forces resisted the attack and prevented the advance towards key strategic routes.
The Pakistan Air Force also played a significant role during the war, carrying out operations against Indian air bases and engaging enemy aircraft in several aerial battles.
Today, Defence and Martyrs Day provides an opportunity for the nation to remember the sacrifices of its martyrs and pay tribute to its veterans. Ceremonies and special prayers are being held across the country to honour those who defended Pakistan during the 1965 war and subsequent conflicts.
The occasion also serves as a reminder of the importance of national unity, courage and commitment to the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The nation is reaffirming its resolve to safeguard Pakistan’s independence, security and national interests while remembering the sacrifices that shaped its history.
