National ( The cow news digital ) The government has rejected the opposition’s proposal seeking a formal arrangement for meetings with jailed former Prime Minister and founder of Imran Khan, intensifying political tensions in Parliament.

The issue was raised during proceedings in both the Senate and National Assembly, where opposition lawmakers demanded the formation of a parliamentary committee to oversee and facilitate meetings with Imran Khan and other detained political figures. However, government representatives dismissed the proposal, stating that there is no legal provision for using such meetings for political purposes.

Speaking in the Senate, Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah said that forming any committee for this purpose was not possible under existing rules and regulations. He argued that the law does not permit meetings with prisoners to be structured around political objectives.

Rana Sanaullah further stated that adequate medical care is being provided to both Imran Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, and insisted that if the opposition believes any procedural violation has occurred, they are free to approach the High Court.

In the National Assembly, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry echoed similar sentiments, saying that meetings with the former prime minister should not be treated as a political issue requiring parliamentary guarantees. He added that the government is actively monitoring all health-related concerns regarding Imran Khan.

He also addressed criticism regarding a recent hospital visit, stating that medical emergencies cannot be scheduled or timed in advance, responding to opposition questions about why the transfer occurred at night.

The opposition, however, continued its protest in both houses of Parliament, demanding transparency and access. Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Raja Nasir Abbas had earlier proposed the formation of a bipartisan committee comprising members of both government and opposition to ensure meetings with Imran Khan and other prisoners.

The standoff reflects continuing political polarization in the country, with opposition parties alleging restrictions on access and the government maintaining that all actions are within legal and procedural boundaries.

As tensions persist, analysts suggest that the issue could further escalate unless a negotiated framework is developed to address concerns from both sides.
