Iran (The COW News Digital)Iran has stated that it has no intention of escalating tensions or entering into a military confrontation, but warned that it would respond decisively if subjected to any form of aggression. The message was delivered at the United Nations Security Council by Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Gholam Hossein Daryaei.

Addressing the council, the Iranian envoy said Tehran is committed to avoiding escalation and conflict, stressing that Iran seeks stability rather than confrontation. However, he made it clear that any direct or indirect hostile action against Iran would be met with a firm and lawful response under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which recognizes the right to self-defense.

Daryaei described Iran’s position as a statement of reality rather than a threat, emphasizing that responsibility for the consequences of any unlawful actions would rest entirely with those who initiate them. He urged the Security Council to take its moral, political, and legal responsibilities seriously by rejecting and condemning any illegal acts before the situation worsens.

During his remarks, the Iranian deputy envoy criticized the Trump administration, referring to it as the “American regime,” and accused it of attempting to achieve through political destabilization what it failed to accomplish during what he described as a 12-day war. He claimed that certain actors are now seeking to create internal unrest in Iran as an alternative means to pursue their objectives.

The envoy also detailed violent incidents that Iran allegedly faced between January 8 and 10, which he described as terrorism similar to the tactics used by Daesh. According to his account, individuals were beheaded, people were burned alive, and security personnel were subjected to severe violence. He alleged that casualty figures were deliberately exaggerated to create a pretext for foreign intervention.

Daryaei warned that any threat or use of force against Iran, regardless of whether it is justified under the pretext of protecting protesters or supporting civilians, would constitute a serious violation of international law and the UN Charter. He added that invoking humanitarian arguments to legitimize the use of force represents a deliberate misuse of international legal principles.

Iran’s statement comes amid heightened regional tensions and growing international scrutiny of internal developments within the country. Analysts say Tehran’s remarks reflect an effort to deter external intervention while signaling readiness to defend itself if necessary.

The Iranian envoy concluded by calling on the Security Council to act decisively and responsibly, stressing that failure to do so could lead to irreversible consequences for regional and international peace.
