WASHINGTON(The COW News Digital) The United States has announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their ceasefire by an additional 45 days following two days of negotiations held in Washington, marking another step in ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize the volatile border region.
According to a statement from the U.S. State Department, the talks were described as “positive and productive,” with both parties agreeing to maintain the truce and continue political and security dialogue under American mediation. The extension is the latest in a series of temporary arrangements aimed at preventing further escalation between the two neighboring states.
The ceasefire was first brokered on April 16, 2026, initially as a 10-day truce facilitated by U.S. diplomatic efforts. It was later extended for three weeks, and has now been prolonged for an additional 45 days following renewed negotiations in Washington. Officials said the process reflects gradual but steady progress in maintaining relative calm along the border.
Under the updated agreement, further diplomatic engagement is scheduled in the coming weeks. Political-level talks between Israeli and Lebanese representatives are expected on June 2 and 3, while military delegations from both sides are set to begin security discussions at the Pentagon on May 29.
Despite the ceasefire framework, reports indicate that tensions on the ground have not fully subsided. Israel has continued limited strikes targeting Hezbollah positions, while Hezbollah has reportedly responded with rocket and drone activity in certain areas. These incidents underscore the fragile nature of the current arrangement.
Lebanon has repeatedly called for a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon and an immediate halt to military operations. Israel, on the other hand, maintains that any lasting agreement must include the disarmament of Hezbollah, which remains a key point of contention in the negotiations.
Hezbollah has not participated directly in the talks, despite being a significant political and military actor within Lebanon’s domestic landscape. The group has also rejected calls to lay down arms, complicating efforts to reach a comprehensive and lasting settlement.
The United States has played a central role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides, positioning itself as a key mediator in efforts to reduce regional tensions. Diplomats say the coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the ceasefire can evolve into a more durable peace framework or risk further breakdown.
